November 2018 - Coastal Shipping Locations For UK Trade & Cargo

Recently there is a revival of shipping cargo around the UK, which offers a sustainable, viable, green & cost effective solution, particularly for bulk products. This particularly suits longer distance movements where users or producers have easy access to coastal ports or inland wharves. TWL coastal shipping is centred on the UK East coast at the Port of Mistley in the south (Essex) and Scunthorpe (the River Trent / Humber region).

Advantages Of Coastal Shipping include reducing road miles & lowering CO2 emissions, reducing road congestion, gaining economies of scale by transporting larger volumes quickly & efficiently over a shorter lead period, improved reliability in delivery schedules for larger volume movements, cost benefits over road freight, availability of some grants to facilitate making the change from road to water and simplifying administration and paperwork.

Areas currently served by coastal shipping routes through TWL facilities include N.E UK, Scotland, N. Ireland and Ireland. There are a range of vessels currently trading between 1000 - 3000 tonnes that undertake these types of cargo shipments around the UK.

Jan 2017 - New Powder Packer for Gainsborough

TWL have just invested in a new air packer to complement their existing packing and bagging lines at their Gainsborough site.

The benefit of the new packer is that we can now pack powders and finer grades of materials into small bags 10 kgs – 25 kgs.

It has been a very interesting year with developments across all four sites based in the UK. We have had staff developments and also capital plant investments which have added to our capabilities as we move into 2017. Earlier in the year we introduced a new warehouse management system, additional crawler grab and a new website for the Port of Mistley.

Andy Bishop TWL’s Northern Operations Manager commented that this new air packer allows us to expand the range of products that we can now pack, as previously we were limited to more granular and coarser commodities. It is also quick to clean down between products, which is important so as to avoid cross contamination between products.

This additional equipment, together with our existing bagging lines, enables us to pack most products here at Gainsborough (except food grades) into bulk bags, small bags or drums ranging from 2000 kgs to 10 kgs.

For more information on packing and bagging, please contact us at 01427 614551.

Nov 2016 - Port of Mistley – Double top!

Two of Mistley’s employees celebrated working for the company for 40 years, last month.

Colin Barton (left) and Chris Baxter (right) both started work at Mistley Quay (initially for Allied Breweries and then Bunge), working on the quays and in the adjacent Maltings. They transferred across to Mistley Quay & Forwarding in 1976 where they have both become integral and invaluable members of the team.

They are pictured below with the Port Operations Manager, Ronald Reason, receiving their long service awards.

A big ‘Thank you’ to both employees for their loyalty, dedication, commitment and enthusiasm shown over the years.

Oct 2016 - Just in time shipments

Mistley continues to be one of the closest commercial ports for break bulk coaster sized vessels to the continent with sailing times of less than 10 hours berth to berth for the 100 nm crossing.

This allows goods to be loaded one day in the continent and arrive in the UK the next day for prompt dispatch or storage.

MV ‘Panda’ recently pictured at the port, sailed from Flushing at 2100 hrs and was ready and discharging the next morning at Mistley after a 7.5 hours crossing.

Harvest Shipping Services Ltd who acted as vessel agents commented...

"We have used the Port at Mistley for many years and find it to be an excellent and competitively priced UK port. It is extremely convenient for vessels to unload or load at Mistley and then to re-position back quickly for their next cargoes moving between the main European ports. With such a short crossing route, sea-freight rates to the port and port costs are good and the staff at Mistley are always helpful and flexible and have expertise in handling the cargoes so as to ensure the prompt turn round of the vessels, essential in today’s markets."

Highfield Primary School visit to the Port of Mistley

The Port was very pleased to welcome a group of pupils and staff from Highfield Primary School, Lawford last week, for a tour of the port and to witness the port operations first hand.

The tour was arranged with the school as part of the Geography curriculum, and gave the pupils an insight into the range of cargoes arriving at Mistley and an understanding of European Trading routes, the types of cargoes moved and their uses, and in particular the role of recycled cargoes and the use of sea as a green transport option.

The pupils were able to see first-hand the busy port and some of the many handling operations. Ronald Reason, Mistley operations Manager gave a brief introduction to the group and explained the operations that the group would see and explained about the ships working and what would happen to the various cargoes handled through the port.

The pupils witnessed the vessel ‘Lady Mary’ discharging a cargo of ash and they were given an insight into some of the other various cargoes handled and stored at the port. As part of the visit, the pupils and staff were weighed on the port weighbridge and presented with their own weighbridge ticket.

The School kindly passed on their thanks to the Mistley team, commenting...
"Many thanks to you both and all the staff that contributed to a wonderfully successful trip. The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip and will share their experience in classes after the holiday."

The Port representatives thanked the group for their interest and we hope that this visit will be the first of many as we look forward to developing closer links with the schools in the local community.
